Traffic flow and road conditions

It is snowing in the Lika and Gorski kotar mountain areas and in the northwestern parts of the country. Most roads are wet and due to low temperatures very slippery, especially bridges and viaducts. Rock sliding is possible on the DC8 Adriatic road and in mountain areas.

A traffic accident on the A6 motorway at the Sleme tunnel towards Zagreb - one lane is free only (60 km/h)!

A broken-down vehicle on the A1 motorway at the Grič tunnel towards Dubrovnik (60 km/h)!

A broken-down vehicle on the A3 motorway at 28th km between the Jakuševec and Kosnica junctions towards Lipovac (80 km/h)!

Due to strong wind on the part of the DC8 Adriatic road Karlobag-Sveta Marija Magdalena passenger traffic is allowed only.

On the A7 motorway between the Rijeka istok and Šmrika junctions there is a traffic ban on: doubledeckers, trailers and motorcycles, on the part of the DC8 Adriatic road Bakar-Karlobag, on the DC99 state road between the Križišće junction and Križišće and on the LC58107 Kraljevica-Križišće local road on the delivery vans and vehicles with covered cargo area too.

At the Krk bridge traffic is suspended for: motorcycles, campers, campers with three or more axles, doubledeckers, double-axle-buses with a trailer, passenger vehicles with a one-axle-trailer, vans, vans with a trailer, freight vehicles up to 6 tonnes of weight.

Strong wind is blowing on the A1 motorway between the Sveti Rok and Čelinka tunnels.

Due to winter driving conditions there is a traffic ban on freight vehicles with trailers and all other vehicles have to use winter equipment on the following roads of

At the Bajakovo border crossing the freight vehicle queue towards Serbia is 9 km long.

Traffic is dense in cities and on their bypass roads.

During the day difficulties can occur in roadwork areas.

Drivers are invited to adjust the speed and the way of driving to the road conditions and to keep distance. 1 November-31 March the headlights have to be on during the day as well.

Traffic restrictions:

A1 Zagreb-Ploče-Karamatići motorway:

until 20 February the Janjče rest area is closed in both directions;

A3 Bregana-Lipovac motorway:

until 19 February 2026 the Kraljeva Velika jug rest area is closed in direction Lipovac, 115th-117th km towards Lipovac the hard shoulder is closed (80 km/h);

A6 Rijeka-Zagreb motorway:

23 December 1am-4.30am traffic is closed once for 15 minutes at the Rijeka paytoll, at the Oštrovica paytoll as well as between the Rijeka paytoll and Kikovica junction due to abnormal load;

A8/A9 highway in Istria

due to roadwork between the Učka tunnel and the Matulji junction temporary traffic regulation has been put into place, detour options for personal vehicles: DC500 Vranja state road-Šušnjevica-Vozilići, ŽC5047 Vranja county road-Veprinac-Matulji;
traffic jams are possible between the Učka junction (A7) and Učka tunnel in both directions;

DC1 state road:

one lane is free only at Tušilović until 12 January, at Rastoke until 3 February;

DC3 state road:

traffic is flowing in one lane only between Vrbovsko and Delnice;

DC44 Livade-Istarske Toplice state road:

until 20 June traffic is suspended on the section Livade-Istarske Toplice;

DC512 state road:

due to rock sliding traffic is suspended at the Stupica tunnel towards Vrgorac.

Border crossings

At the border crossings with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro a new system of entering/exiting the country (so called Entry/Exit System - EES) is applied. It means that apart from having travel documents biometric passenger data will be collected (four fingerprints and face photo). This law does not refer to EU citizens.

Notifications about waiting time at border crossings are subject to frequent changes. Access to cameras at border crossings is provided on the Croatian Automobile Club website.

Until 31 December 2026 at the Erdut-Bogojevo border crossing there is a traffic ban on freight vehicles exceeding 7,5 tonnes.

The Gunja-Brčko border crossing is closed for all traffic, detour: Županja-Orašje border crossing.

At the Ilok-Bačka Palanka bridge traffic is allowed for vehicles up to 24 tonnes (driving speed limit of 30 km/h).

Starting 3 Junly 2023 international traffic is possible at the Slivno-Drinovačko Brdo border crossing.

Transit freight traffic is suspended at the Tovarnik/Šid border crossing, detour: Bajakovo border crossing.

Traffic is suspended for vehicles whose maximum weight exceeds 7,5 tonnes at the Pribanjci-Vinica border crossing on the DC204 state road.

The Dvor and Vitaljina border crossings are open for pedestrians and passenger traffic only.

The border crossings for the international maritime traffic are: Umag, Pula, Mali Lošinj, Vis, Ubli and Cavtat (Book of Regulations on border crossings of the Republic of Croatia, pubblished at the Narodne novine, 2 January

Due to bad weather the following ferries, catamarans and ships do not operate:

Dubrovnik-Koločep-Lopud-Suđurađ ferry;
M.Lošinj-Cres-Rijeka, Novalja-Rab-Rijeka, Ubli-Korčula-Dubrovnik, Ubli-Vela Luka-Hvar-Split, Sobra (Mljet)-Šipanska Luka-Dubrovnik, Ubli-Korčula-Dubrovnik catamarans;
Dubrovnik-Koločep-Lopud-Suđurađ, Zadar-Preko, M. Lošinj-Unije-Susak ships.

606 Drvenik Veli-Drvenik Mali-Trogir (Soline) ferry does not embark at Drvenik Mali port.

On the line Prizna-Žigljen there will be following journeys only due to bad weather: 9.40am (Prizna), 10am (Žigljen), 12.25pm (Prizna), 12.45pm (Žigljen), 3.10pm (Prizna), 3.30pm (Žigljen), 4.40pm (Prizna), 5pm (Žigljen), 6.10pm (Prizna), 6.30pm (Žigljen).

Split-Vela Luka-Ubli ferry departs Ubli port on Sundays and on holidays at noon (instead at 1pm), Split port at 5pm (instead at 6pm).

Šibenik-Zlarin-Prvić Luka-Prvić Šepurine-Vodice ship does not embark at Prvić Luka port.

Driving restrictions for heavy goods vehicles

Summer restrictions on freight vehicles

15 June-15 September there are traffic restrictions on freight vehicles heavier than 7,5 tonnes on Saturdays 4am-2pm, on Sundays noon-11pm and on holidays 3pm-11pm on the following roads:

- DC8-DC40 Bakar junction-Zadar-Split-Klek border crossing-Zaton Doli border crossing-Dubrovnik-Karasovići border crossing (except on the part DC27-Šibenik bridge-Šibenik-DC58, Bilice roundabout at Solin-Stobreč);

- DC9-Metković-Opuzen-DC8;

- DC21 Kaštel border crossing-Buje-Kanfanar junction (except on the part DC21 Kanfanar-Pula-DC66);

- DC23 Žuta Lokva-Senj;

- DC39-A1-Šestanovac roundabout-DC8-Dupci;

- DC66 Pula junction (A9)-Raša-Opatija-DC8;

- DC200 Buje (DC21)-Plovanija border crossing;

Traffic restrictions for transit freight vehicles through Croatia:

For freight vehicle exceeding 7,5 tonnes there is a traffic ban on the DC414 state road from DC8-DC414 intersection to Prapratno junction as well as from Prapratno junction to Komarna junction (Pelješac bridge and its access roads).

According to the Book of regulations for public road transit traffic, freight vehicles heavier than 7,5 tonnes without a trailer/with a trailer longer than 14 m are allowed to use the following roads:

Traffic forecast for 25 December 2025

Most roads will be wet and slippery. Attention to flood possible on some sections! Due to fog visibility will be reduced in the interior. Rock sliding is possible in mountain areas and on the DC8 Adriatic road. In the northwestern parts and in mountain areas it will be snowing.

Dense traffic is expected in cities and their bypass roads as well as on some motorway sections: on the A3 Bregana-Lipovac motorway eastbound, on the A2 Zagreb-Macelj motorway in direction Zagreb, A7 Rupa-Rijeka, A6 Rijeka-Zagreb, A1 Zagreb-Split-Ploče, in Istria on the A8/A9 highway.

Difficulties can occur in roadwork areas.

In passenger and freight traffic there can be delays at most border crossings with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro.

In ferry traffic difficulties are expected due to wind.

Drivers are invited to adjust the speed and the way of driving to the road conditions, to keep distance and not to start the journey without the winter equipment.
